AUGUST 20, 2012 - AUGUST 24, 2012 WEEKLY AGENDA FOR A.P. HONORS ENGLISH Monday, August 20th: Read "The Snake" packet; analyze and discuss the use of diction to establish tone Assign a brief two paragraph essay on the literary excerpt "The Rattler"; this will be due on Tuesday. Tuesday, August 21st: The short essay on "The Rattler" is due today. Read brief excerpt from THE HANDMAID'S TALE.  Analyze Atgood's use of figurative language to establish tone. Wednesday, August 22nd: Work on analysis of THE HANDMAID'S TALE.  Assign essay on THE HANDMAID'S TALE. This will be due on Friday, August 24th. Thursday, August 23rd: Assign Vocabulary Workshop: Level F, Unit 1; this will be due on Tuesday, August 28th.  Pass out Aristotle's POETICS. Show Power Point on Aristotle.  Small demonstration on the Four Causes. Friday, August 24th: Divide into groups; analyze assigned selection of Aristotle's POETICS; present to class.
August 15, 2012 SUMMER READING Please read two of the following books: CATCH-22 by Joseph Heller THE HANDSMAID’S TALE by Margaret Atwood ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST by Ken Kesey THE POISONWOOD BIBLE by Barbara Kingsolver 1984 by George Orwell WRITTEN ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT: After reading two of the above books, you are to write a short analysis paper. (Instructions below.) Please note that an analysis paper is to be completed for each of the two books you have read.   These papers must reflect your own original thought. No outside sources should be used.   The essays must be typed and follow standard MLA format. Choose a two to five page excerpt from the novel that illustrates one to two key literary elements that are essential to an understanding of the piece as a whole.   These “literary elements” might be the speaker or the author’s tone, an instance of character development, the novel’s symbolism, dialogue, diction, imagery or some ot
