SEPTEMBER 29TH WEEKLY SCHEDULE FOR AP ENGLISH LITERATURE Tuesday, September 29th: Shortened day! Warm-up: A selection from the book VOICES on selection of detail. DAYBREAK: Critical Reading and Writing: pages 25-26; “Nature of Symbolic Fire” and “First Frost”. TRIPTYCH/PASTICHE ASSIGNMENT: A triptych is an artistic creation (painting or photographs) consisting of three panels exploring a subject. A pastiche is an artistic creation composed of bits, pieces and snippets from other sources, usually creative (visual medium - paintings, photos, film; or literary - poems, novels, etc; or music - snippets, etc.) but can also be from “found sources” - i.e. junk, trash, household objects, etc. The assignment: Break into groups, analyze the three poems from “First Frost” and select the best lines from each poem to create a new poem. This “triptych/pastiche” poem will be due on Thursday, September 23rd which your group will share with the class. Now you do it. For homework: “Your First Time”:
THE HANDMAID’S TALE PROMPT Using your matrix, choose one of the major themes or topics (the ones you put at the top of the page: sex, fertility, power, etc) and then choose three or four of the figurative language (the ones along the left margin of your paper) to create your own prompt. Example: How does Margaret Atwood use such figurative language devices as symbolism, metaphor and imagery to convey tone and theme in THE HANDMAID’S TALE? How does Margaret Atwood use such figurative language devices as ____________, __________________ and _______________ to convey ________________ and ______________ in THE HAND MAID’S TALE? The essay should be a minimum of two pages, preferably typed and is due on Tuesday, 29th.

Discuss how punctuation affects meaning. Read excerpt from THE HANDMAID'S TALE and answer the multiple choice questions over the text. If we have time we will analyze the Margaret Atwood excerpt today - hence the post-its. (By the way, please make sure you bring them.) You will be given a reprieve on the analytical essay on THE HANDMAID'S TALE which will be assigned today. The essay will be due on Wednesday, September 23rd. Tuesday, September 22nd: Your VOCABULARY WORKSHOP: Level G, "Unit One" homework will be due today. Continue working and analyzing THE HANDMAID'S TALE. Make sure you bring post-its. Wednesday, September 23rd: Your analytical essay, THE HANDMAID'S TALE, is due today. Pass out literary terms packet. Break into groups of three, choose a minimum of three terms

AGENDA FOR AP ENGLISH LITERATURE SEPTEMBER 14TH - 18TH Monday, September 14th: Read excerpts from THE THINGS THEY CARRIED. Tuesday, September 15th: Today we will share contents of our backpacks and purses - so make sure you leave your contraband at home! Written Assignment: Using Tim O’Brien’s technique, choose or create three characters and reveal who they are by the things they carry - by the contents of their purse, their backpacks or by the things they choose to carry in hand. The assignment should be a minimum of half a page. This assignment will be due on Thursday, September 17th. Wednesday, September 16th: The summer reading assignment is due today for those of you who had Itkin or Carmicle last semester in 11th grade AP English Language.
