Monday, September 28th: Please pass out the “Types of Prose Passage Essay Questions” handout. Tell them to finish annotating the excerpt from “The Dead”, if they haven’t finished, and then read pages 66, 67, and 68, and try their hand at writing an opening paragraph on the following prompt: In the following passage from the short story, “The Dead”, James Joyce presents an insight into the character of Gabriel.   Write a well-organized essay in which you discuss various aspects of Gabriel’s character that Joyce reveals to the reader and to Gabriel. Refer to such techniques and devices as imagery, point of view, motif, diction, and syntax. Monday, August 21st:   George helped the students sign on to schoology. Gave background and context to The Handmaid’s Tale Read excerpt from The Handmaid’s Tale Analyzed it a bit; went over the first two analytical questions -   1.      Write down all the associations you have about glass and ice cubes. 2.      What shared properties do glass and ice cubes have? Questions will be due on Wednesday, August 23 rd . Vocabulary Unit 1 will be due on Tuesday, August 22 nd . Tuesday, August 15th: Signed people into class. Went over the syllabus Wednesday, August 16th: Read excerpt from The Things They Carried Annotate: What does each item reveal about the person who carries it? Kiowa – carrying the Bible for hope; very religious; quiet; simple; Native American; Henry – misses his girlfriend, misses the sensuality of his girlfriend Rat Kiley – “m&m’s” and brandy, enjoys simple pleasures, reckless Dave Jenson – vitamins in carotene; all for himself; Lee Strunk – slingshot; old fashioned   Everybody needs something as a security blanket Ted Lavender – he’s a dreamer, determined; when he gets stressed out he can look up at the star; he prefers the night time. Change the item the character is carrying.
