August 28, 2017 - September 1, 2017 Agenda

Monday, September 28th:

Please pass out the “Types of Prose Passage Essay Questions” handout. Tell them to finish annotating the excerpt from “The Dead”, if they haven’t finished, and then read pages 66, 67, and 68, and try their hand at writing an opening paragraph on the following prompt:

In the following passage from the short story, “The Dead”, James Joyce presents an insight into the character of Gabriel.  Write a well-organized essay in which you discuss various aspects of Gabriel’s character that Joyce reveals to the reader and to Gabriel. Refer to such techniques and devices as imagery, point of view, motif, diction, and syntax.

After they have worked on their opening paragraph, allow them to work on their Perrine’s homework, which is:

HW assigned: Perrine’s, “Proving Your Point”, page 11; “Introducing Quotations”, page 15; “Grammar”, page 30, “Punctuation”, page 31; due Thursday, August 31st

Tuesday, September 29th:

Never write this:

Never write – The writer/author uses a lot of metaphors/similes/figurative language.

You are listing things and not analyzing. This will not get you points!!!!

“One example of imagery that thickens this tension is the cold which is mirrored by the ice and the glass.”
Find examples from the text that reveal or clarify the themes or the tone used by the author.

What is tone?

First scene by Elizabeth and Kais:
Two people talking about politics.
Phrase is: “Are you serious?”
Shocked! Another word for shock is dumbfounded. Another word is incredulous!
Subtext:  the meaning and intent under the text or the words. The implication or subtext is “Boy, are you dumb!” To tell someone s/he is dumb is condescending, so the tone is condescending!!!!
Next scene:
Pregnant wife telling her husband she is expecting.
Phrase: “Are you serious!”
Tone: Excited!  Joyous! Ecstatic! Euphoric!
Next scene:
Elizabeth and Kais accidentally kill Oscar!
Accidental murder!
Phrase: “Are you serious!?
Tone: Disbelief! Skeptical! Incredulous! Fear!
Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject or the character or some aspect of the piece.
Find one piece of literary device in A Handmaid’s Tale and write one or two sentences that illustrate how it shows tone in the piece.
Do not use “The author uses a great deal of _______________ in this piece to depict tone.”
Use an action verb and/or an adjective in your sentence that mirrors the tone or mood (ambience, atmosphere) in the piece.
Icy; cold; sterile;  clinical; empty – ironic for a handmaid is expected to be “full” with child but Offred is not; she is empty or barren; enamel, hot - suffocating, choking, strangling, stifling – also has a dual meaning which is to suppress; infantilism – childlike, childish; white, etc.
Angela: kudos for empty
Good action verbs which echo, mirror, or reflect the mood (atmosphere, ambience, environment) or tone (attitude) of the literary piece should be used rather than the tired out “shows”, “reveals”, “depicts”.
Matteo: reflect
Good action verb banks: reflect, mirror, echo

For tomorrow:
Please bring your Perrine’s book so we can go over the homework.

For homework tonight, please find one piece of literary device in A Handmaid’s Tale and write one or two sentences that illustrate how it shows tone and/or mood  in the piece. Please avoid: “The writer uses a lot of _____________ in the piece.” Do not list! This is an example of listing: “The writer uses a lot of similes such as “Aztec hearts” and “like a whiny, importunate child”. Do not use the following words: “show”, “reveal”, “depict”, “express” as in “The writer uses “Aztec hearts to show Offred as a sacrificial victim”.
