First Period: Hi guys. I am not going to be here tomorrow. I am going to an all day theatre workshop. However, your asignment is to write a one to five paragraph analytical essay on THE MAMBO KINGS" - the handout we went over on Monday and again, on Tuesday. The prompt is: Analyze how the author uses sensory detail and the effects the sensory imagery produces. I also want you to use the graph that we worked on today in class to help you in your analysis. Horizontally there shoulde be a listing of the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste) and vertically along the left of the graph should be literary devices such as alliteration, rhythm, etc. As you analyze the excerpt write down the details, and the literary devices that are used. You will turn both in on Thursday. Hi guys! First Period: Please bring your white (well, they're all stained and tattered and torn up) Warriner's grammar book on Monday. We're going to go over some fun grammar stuff. We're also going to do a little bit of Beowulf and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales - not all of it. On Tuesday, I will give you a wee little test on Unit 12 vocabulary. On Wednesday, I will be at an all day theatre workshop but I will return on Thursday! Soon, very soon we will be studying the Bard - Hamlet to be exact. Second Period: We will go over your very long vocabulary homework on Monday, and we will finish the short story, "By Any Other Name." There will be an essay which I will assign to you on Tuesday, which will probably be due on Friday. On Thursday, which is a minimum day, I will give you a wee test on your much hated vocabulary words. Finish up your outside reading book and don't forget your reading logs! October 18th: Hi guys! I'm not going to be at school on Monday, so be nice to the sub. 1st Period: Continue working on your Unit 12 Vocabulary; it will be due on Wednesday. Your Aristotle/Antigone essay will be due on Tuesday. The prompt for Aristotle is: Choosing any play you have read, analyze how the play conforms or does not conform to Aristotle's concepts as set forth in THE POETICS. Also, if you have any outstanding work (and you know what I mean by that!) please get it to me no later than Tuesday! After Tuesday, regardless of how brilliantly it may be written, it cannot help you on your midterm grade. Second Period: Hi guys! Work in your vocabulary book, pages 90 - 103; exercises 1 - 9. This will be due on Wednesday, October 22nd. Please do pages 151 - 152, the exciting world of adverbial clauses in your ENGLISH WORKSHOP book; exercises 3 & 4. Hi Guys: For 3rd and 5th period, you are to write a three (3) paragraph essy on "A Man Called Horse". The essay topic is as follows: In "A Man Called Horse", the author writes, "He could afford to be *magnanimous for he knew he was a man." Giving examples from the story, show the journey that took him from being a shallow, immature young man to a magnanimous, mature, responsible man who knew he was the equal of any man. What was the final moment in his journey, his trek that made him a man? *Magnanimous means generous, bountiful. The essay is due tomorrow (Tuesday, October 7th) for 3rd period; Wednesday, October 8th for 5th period.
October 5th: First Period: Hi, guys! Don't forget that your essays are going to be due on Tuesday, October 7th. You will also have a small test on Unit 11 Vocabulary on Tuesday. The Annie Dillard's essay "Flood" will be due on Thursday - a nice little creative writing project that you can wrap your mind around. Tomorrow (Monday, October 6th) we will finish up discussing ANTIGONE, and if we have enough time, begin working on Aristotle's POETICS. We will also do a lesson on tone and voice by studying two poems, one by Langston Hughes, and the other by Anne Bradstreet. See you tomorrow. 2nd Period: Keep working on your essays, guys. On Wednesday, we will have a wee vocabulary test over pages 71 - 77.
