Monday, September 27th:

Journal: Do you believe that minors (people under the age of 18) who have been charged with serious and heinous crimes should be tried as adults? Why or why not?
Go over English Workshop; pages 161 - 162; exercise 1; “Independent and Subordinate Clauses”.
Begin work on “Persuasive Essay”on “Land Mine Bans”. Read arguments for and arguments against the land mine bans. Work on your own short construction response.
6th Period: Test on “Most Dangerous Game” and Plot Construction

Continue working on “Persuasive Essay”
Read student essay: “Save the Children”
“Art of Argument”: Reasons and Evidence
English Workshop grammar homework due; pages 161 - 162; exercise 1.
Wednesday, September 29th:
I won’t be in class today. (Yeah!) However, I WILL be on campus for staff development and I WILL l be checking up on you, so be good!
First period: Read “Poison” - short story in anthology.
Sixth period: Read “The Scarlet Ibis” - short story in anthology.
Thursday, September 30th:
Bring Vocabulary book; assign pages 18 - 27; exercises 11 - 19. Due Tuesday, October 5th.

For Homework: Bring in ads and/or descriptions of commercials which employ some of the following persuasive techniques: overgeneralizations, either/or, bandwagon appeal, snob appeal, loaded language, testimonials.

Quick grammar review: Comma splice handout
Present some of the ads and commerials that use the above persuasive techniques.
“Weighing an Argument: Appeal to Emotions” and “”Appeals to the Reader”.
