AP ENGLISH SCHEDULE
WEEK OF OCTOBER 18TH


Tuesday, October 19th:

Go over writing strategies for essays. Review James Joyce’s “The Dead”.

Review Unit 3 Vocabulary.

Due today the imitative paragraph of James Joyce’s “The Dead”.
Write one paragraph in the style of James Joyce describing a character in a setting in which the setting reflects the internal state of the character.


Wednesday, October 20th:

Presentation by Raymond Matsamura on diction, denotation, connotation, tone.

“Adverbial Clause handouts” will be passed out and discussed. The handout is homework and will be due on Thursday, October 21st.

Go over answers to Unit 3 Vocabulary

Read and finish Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus.


Thursday, October 21st:

Multiple choice questions over the poem,“The Writer”, by Richard Wilbur. Read, analyze and go over in class.

Finish reading Oedipus at Colonus.
Discussion.

The Sophocles essay will be due on Monday, October 25th. You already have the ten suggested Sophocles’ essay topics. If you want to write on another topic, then you must run the topic past me for an okay.


Friday, October 22nd:

Unit Three Vocabulary test

Finish discussion on Oedipus at Colonus.

If there is time, read and analyze “On The Subway” by Sharon Olds. Analysis of writing the essay on poetry.

Don’t forget that the first literary term paragraph is due by October 25th.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true?
