Monday, November 22nd:

Unit Five in Vocabulary will be assigned. It will be due on Monday, November 29th.

Grammar handout on verb tenses will be passed out. It will be due on Wednesday, November 24th.

Journal: Continue working on “The Hand!” Share your “hand” with a friend.

We will continue reading about the devilish doings of Abigail in The Crucible. We are now on Act lll. Don’t forget the reading log.

Start writing down some questions you want to ask the characters from The Crucible.



Tuesday, November 23rd:

Please bring your English Workshop; we are going over the delightful world of “Verbals”. (Don’t have the page number so I’ll have to get back to you on that one.)

Wednesday, November 24th:

Finish reading The Crucible. Hot seats! Posing as a character from the play, you will be asked questions by your classmates about your character.

We will also go over the forthcoming compare and contrast essay on a character and her/his foil.

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true? Literary devices: Narrative perspective (Pov) and selection of detail. Middlemarch: underline novels!!!!! Rosamond’s personality: She was not given to weeping and disliked it.
