9th Grade Honors
Weekly Schedule
of December 13th

Monday, December 13th:

We are now definitely thundering into the home stretch! Yeah!

1st Period:

We will climb into our boat again and sail past the hideous Scylla and the frightening Charybdis! Then we will rest on the beautiful island of the Sun God Helios where we will dine on Helio’s beeves and kine. Because we have once again disobeyed the “host-guest” ties, and ignored Circe’s warnings not to eat Helio’s beeves and kines, our ship will be destroyed by a vengeful Poseidon,
and all will perish except Odysseus, and of course, us. We, along with Odysseus, will be swept to the island of the lovely Calypso, where we will have gone - at last - full circle. Then we’ll briefly go over our stay with Calypso, our brief stint with Princess Nausicaa and her father, King Alcinous, and then at last, we will land at Ithaca! Home at last!

6th Period:

We will climb into our boat again and land on the island of Circe where some of us will be turned into animals! We will stay way too long there, then take off for “The Land of the Dead” where we will meet Teiresias, the blind sage, who will tell us our future. Then we’ll sail back to Circe who will tell us how to get past the deadly Sirens, the hideous Scylla and the frightening Charybdis - which we will manage to do if we follow Circe’s advice. Then we will take a break and lounge on the Sun God Helio’s island where, despite Circe’s (and Odysseus’) warning, we will eat his beeves and kine. Because we once again disobeyed the “host-guest ties” our ship will be destroyed by a lightning bolt sent by the gods. All will be destroyed but Odysseus - and of course, us. We will then be swept to the island of Calypso, where at last our story has come full circle.

Tuesday, December 14th:

Shortened Day!

1st and 6th Period:

Because we are smart, we don’t go blundering first thing into Odysseus’s palace. No! First, along with Odysseus, we pet the ancient dog, Argos, and then we go to the sheepherder’s hut where, for the first time in twenty years, Odysseus meets his son, Telemachus. Get your hankies out! Then Athena will put a spell over Odysseus to make him look like an old beggar man. He will hobble into the great hall where the cruel suitors will make fun of him. Odysseus will then see for the first time in twenty years his beloved wife, Penelope, who will not recognize him.
The wily Penelope, who is as smart as her husband, Odysseus, then devises a plan to test the suitors. Whoever can string Odysseus’ huge bow and shoot an arrow unerringly through a row of ax handles to a target on the other side will be her choice for husband. Guess who’s the only guy in the hall who can do that? That’s right! The old guy sitting in the corner.
We will then plot, along with father and son, on how best to dispatch the evil suitors who have long abused the “host-guest ties”.

Wednesday, December 15th:

Your notebooks will be due! Don’t worry! You will be given a syllabus on Monday, December 13th, on the organization of your notebook.

We really don’t have time for you to organize your notebook in class, so please work on it at home on Monday and Tuesday night.

Last day of class! Yeah! We will help Odysseus and Telemachus, along with their two trusty goat and swine herders, dispatch the selfish suitors. And we will also find out what happens to the maids who have betrayed Penelope - it’s not pretty!

Athena transforms Odysseus back into the handsome strong man he really is. Then at last, we will watch the tender reunion of husband and wife. Does it go smoothly? Does anything ever go smoothly in this story? The lovely Penelope, who has grown skeptical during her twenty years of separation, has devised yet another test to see if this man truly is her beloved Odysseus or just another interloper out of many she has had to endure. Let’s see if he passes the test.

At long last, we will wave an affectionate goodbye to the wily Odysseus, to the stoic son Telemachus, and to the equally wily, strong and lovely Penelope.

Your final exam will be a game board based on The Odyssey.

You will also have a short grammar quiz that will take about thirty to forty minutes.

Final Exams:

Monday, December 20th:

7:40 am: 1st Period
After Nutrition: 6th Period
