We are thundering into the home stretch!

Monday, December 13th:

A list of Hamlet essay questions will be passed out today. The essay will be due on Friday, December 17th, the day of your exam.

Verily, thou hast finished perusing the third act of Hamlet and of course have finished answering the questions o’er the third act.

We will go over the Hamlet and Ophelia scene and what exactly did he mean when he sayeth to her, “Get thee to a nunnery!” We will also goeth o’er Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” soliloquy and Claudius’ speech, “My sins are rank”.

We will then watch the video of Act lll.

You will be given the fourth act to read and the open book test over Act lV. Do not look at the test until after you have read the act! There are many surprises in this act and I don’t want to spoil it for you!

Tuesday, December 14th:

Shortened Day!

We will go over some of the interesting events of Act lV, and watch the video.
I will give you the fifth and final act of Hamlet along with the open book test over Act V.

Wednesday, December 15th:

The last day of class!

We will go over some of the events of Act V and watch the video of Hamlet.

REMEMBER: TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN YOUR LITERARY TERMS. DO NOT - I REPEAT! - DO NOT TURN IN ALL FIVE OF YOUR LITERARY TERMS TODAY IF YOU HAVE NOT TURNED IN YOUR FOUR PREVIOUS LITERARY TERMS. IF YOU HAVEN'T TURNED IN ANY LITERARY TERMS, THEN IT IS TOO LATE TO TURN THEM IN NOW!

Final Exam:

3rd Period: 7:40 am; Friday, December 17th.

We will do any finishing up of Hamlet.
Your essay is due today on Hamlet. Do not turn it in late! I will not have time to grade it if you turn it into me on Monday or Tuesday.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true?
