March 28th Weekly Schedule
for AP English literature


Monday, March 28th:

The pace quickens from this point on until May 6th!

Briefly go over some aspects of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT: Utilitarian philosophy, “Ubermensch”, etc. Character analysis, etc.

Pass out packet on CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, including essay topics. The essay will be due Tuesday, April 5th.

Break into groups and begin composing questions and answers for the following characters: Raskolnikov; Svidrigaylov, Razumikhin, Porfiry, Luzhin. Sonia, Dounia, Katerina.

Homework: pages 68, 69, 70 in WARRINER’S ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION; “The Participial Phrase”. This will be due on Wednesday, March 30th.



Tuesday, March 29th:

Your compare and contrast essay on poetry by John Keats and Robert Frost is due today.

We will briefly go over the poems.

Briefly go over some plot and character analysis of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT.

Continue working in groups on the characters in CRIME AND PUNISHMENT.



Wednesday, March 30th:

Your grammar homework is due today; “The Participial Phrase.”

“Hot Seat!” Groups will get up and represent the psychological gestalt of a particular character and will field questions from the other groups regarding motivation, etc. of the character. Each team will get up and represent at least two characters.

For homework: Pass out packets on the romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his poem, “Kubla Khan”, pages 463, 464, 465 and 465 in ENGLAND IN LITERATURE. For homework, write a two paragraph mini-essay on Coleride’s use of language - diction, figurative language, rhythm - to create mood in “Kubla Khan.” This will be due the next day, Thursday, March 31st.

Another compare and contrast essay will be assigned today over two poems - one by Emily Dickinson and the other, one you already know - “Acquainted with the Night” - by Robert Frost. This will be due on Thursday, April 7th.



Thursday, March 31st:

“Hot Seat!” will continue!

Discussion of CRIME AND PUNSHMENT will continue as needed.

Friday, April 1st:

Final wrapping up of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT.

Pass out vocabulary books. Unit Five will be assigned. It will be due on Friday, April 8th. Is the pace quickening? You bet! And it’s going to get more frenetic!
