AP English
Weekly Schedule
for May 8, 2006

Monday, May 8th:

Enough resting! Today we will read W.T. Stace’s “Man Against the Darkness” and Albert Camus’ “The Myth of Sisyphus”.

Tuesday, May 9th:

We will read and discuss Albert Camus’ THE STRANGER. If everyone is finished with the book, as I sincerely hope is the case, we will begin reading ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

Wednesday, May 10th:

Please be sure to bring your purple and gold textbook - you know the one, the
big, heavy one you’ve been toting around all semester in your backpack. We will be reading some brilliant and deeply moving poetry from WW1 - all of which was written by young men serving in a war they all believed in initially but later came to realize that the “War to end all wars” was really all about making money. Many of the poets died in combat.

We will continue reading and discussing ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

Thursday, May 11th:

I will give you some excerpts from Tim O’Briens’ THE THINGS THEY CARRIED which we will juxtapose with ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

Friday, May 12th:

Finish up ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. If I have the energy - I’m making no promises! - I will see about getting the dvd of A LONG ENGAGEMENT, which is a very long and not a particularly good film, but the first twenty minutes will give you some idea of what warfare was like during WW1.

The next book we will essay will be HEART OF DARKNESS. I would like to show you Francis Ford Coppola’s APOCALYPSE NOW which is a brilliant film and is based on HEART OF DARKNESS, but is updated and transferred from the African ivory trade of the 19th Century to the Viet Nam Conflict of the 20th Century. There are some disturbing parallels between the two.
