AP English

Monday, September 25th:

Good morning, fellow scholars and artists! I hope you had an enjoyable weekend.

Today you will be given an ongoing assignment that will last the duration of the semester. You will find examples of literary terms in literature which you will then analyze and turn in at two week intervals. The first one will be due on October 13, 2006. You will be given a paper today that will explain how to do it.

Finally, Sophocles’ THE OEDIPAL CYCLE will be checked out to you.

Today, we will continue reading and discussing Aristotle’s POETICS. Then we will break into groups, read, analyze, outline the reading and then make posters, etc., and present your section of the POETICS to the class.

WE HAVE GOT TO GET STARTED ON THE GREEKS!!! SERIOUSLY!!!

Now that I said that....as soon as we finish the POETICS, then we will begin reading Sophocles’ THE OEDIPAL CYCLE. Enjoy!

Tuesday, September 26th:

Today is another shortened day!

To prepare you for the literary terms test which is coming up on Wednesday, October 4th, I will give short little exercises at the beginning of class going over those orphan terms such as hyperbole, etc., that were not picked up by anyone.

Your writing assignment from last week is due today. You are to write a paragraph on one of your objects. This object is to represent an aspect of your life. Don’t be too “on the nose on this” - be subtle! There should be a conflict of some sort or a “situation” that involves this aspect of your life. Use your best descriptive writing. Use metaphors, similes, personifications - all those terms we have been working with!

We will continue working on Aristotle’s POETICS.

Wednesday, September 27th:

Quick little literary term review/exercise.

I will also officially assign Unit Two from your VOCABULARY WORKSHOP, Level F. This will be due on Monday, October 2nd.
Remember, if you do the assignment then I won't give you the test; but if you blow off the assignment, then I will give you the test. The reason is that the test is RIDICULOUSLY easy, and wastes about twenty minutes of time each week. The good side is that it is RIDICULOUSLY easy and saves some people's grades. However, if everyone does the homework assignment ( which really is easy) then you won't have to sweat the test. (And some people have failed the test.) Okay? Bottom line: I want you all to be exposed to these words and to know them.

Today, I hope, we will be finished with Aristotle’s POETICS and then we will begin working on an interesting writing assignment (or at least, I think it’s interesting). You will look at a piece of lingerie (woman’s - not mine) and a pair of men’s boots. You will then write a list of connotative, descriptive adjectives that you see when you look at the lingerie and boots.
Thursday, September 28th:

Shortened day again! Whoopee!

Tonight is “Open House” where your parents come to school between six and eight and I get to tell them ALL ABOUT YOU! This is where I get my revenge.

Anyway, before I dismiss you early so you can frolic about Hollywood, we will quickly go over an excerpt from James Joyce’s novella, THE DEAD, where, yes, a woman’s petticoat and a man’s pair of boots do figure in the story. We will read it and then you will mark up your paper with marginalia, highlights, underlinings, etc. categorizing according to connotative, figurative language - just like we did with Margaret Atwood’s THE HANDMAID’S TALE. From this, you will write an essay analyzing how Joyce’s use of figurative language illustrates the relationship between the man and the woman in the story. I hope that your creative writing assignment helps you in analyzing this excerpt. This essay on James Joyce’s THE DEAD will be due on Tuesday, October 3, 2006.

We will begin reading OEDIPUS REX. Because of the time constraints, you will be assigned about twenty pages a night to read. Be sure you take notes on your reading. Write down plot points, things you noticed about the characters,
any questions, or observations you may have.

Friday, September 29th:

Quick little literary term review/exercise! Remember the literary terms test is coming up on Wednesday, October 4th.

Concentrate on reading and analyzing OEDIPUS REX.
