October 23rd Weekly Schedule

AP English Literature


Monday, October 23rd:

Good morning! I hope you had a restful weekend. Today we will work a bit on our vocabulary presentations for Unit 2. We will present the presentations on Friday, 27th. Ti’Onae and Charisma will present theirs on Monday, October 30th.

We will begin reading the essay on “The Problem with the Other”.


Tuesday, October 24th:

Today we will have another wee session working on the vocabulary presentations. Then we will finish reading “The Problem with the Other”.


Wednesday, October 25th:

I will pass out to you a cool little grammar handout from a book entitled SENTENCE COMBINING. We will figure out how to do absolute phrases - always a tricky proposition. The handout will be due on Friday, October 27th.

We will begin reading ANTIGONE.

Again, a wee bit of time will be set aside for rehearsing our Unit Two vocabulary presentations.

Thursday, October 26th:

We will read and discuss ANTIGONE.


Friday, October 27th:

Finally! Three weeks in the making! Our Unit Two Vocabulary presentations - which I will videotape and show to future generations of AP students for their delight and edification.

We will continue reading, discussing and finally burying ANTIGONE.

An essay on either ANTIGONE and OEDIPUS AT COLONUS is just around the corner. Remember those essay topics I gave you a few weeks ago? You get to choose one of those and write an essay on it. This will be due on Friday, November 3rd.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true? How to Approach the A.P. prompt for MIDDLEMARCH How does Eliot portray characters? How does she portray complex relationship between husband and wife? Literary devices: Narrative perspective (Pov) and selection of detail. Middlemarch: underline novels!!!!! Rosamond’s personality: She was not given to weeping and disliked it. Lines 14 – 16: Rosamond thinks….. Go through the entire prompt and find examples of pov (narrative perspective) of Rosamond. Find at least three examples.
