Monday, November 13th:

Your ENGLISH WORKSHOP homework, “adverbial clause,” pages 169 - 170, exercises 4 and 5 are due today.

Pass out the “Literary Wheel” and of course, explain. You will use this handy little “wheel” in your reading of HAMLET to help you with the literary tropes and with the themes.

We will go over a handout on reading comprehension (breaking down some of the more difficult passages) in Act 1, Scenes 2 through 5.

We will then discuss the rest of Act 1 and if we have time, we will watch Act 1, Scene 5 of Kenneth Branagh’s film.


Tuesday, November 14th:

Shortened Day!

Journal: Using five of your vocabulary words from Unit 3, please write five sentences with adverbial clauses. You will turn this in for credit.

As soon as we are finished with Act One of HAMLET, your Act One open book test will be due.

We will finish analyzing Act One and then watch Act One, Scene 5.


Wednesday, November 15th:

Journal: Using five of your vocabulary words from Unit 3, please write five sentence with adverbial clauses. You will turn this in for credit.

Another handout on breaking down and analyzing some of the more difficult passages in Act Two, Scene 1 of HAMLET.

The Act Two open book test on HAMLET will be passed out today.

Thursday, November 16th:

Read Act Two, Scenes 1 and 2. Discussion of: plot, characters, relationships, comprehension, literary tropes.

For homework: Ye gads! Another handout on breaking down and analyzing Act 2.

Friday, November 17th:

Using five of your vocabulary words from Unit 3, please write five sentences with adverbial clauses.

Continue reading and discussing Act 2; then we will watch Act 2 of HAMLET.

For homework: Please go back over Act 2; work on the handouts and the Act 2 open book test. The Act 2 test will be due on Tuesday, November 21st.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true?
