Wednesday, March 14th:

Good morning, scholars and artists!
I hope you had a wonderful fun-filled weekend! Now, back to work!

I am going to check out your vocabulary and grammar books to you - sorry, I know they’re not fun, but they are necessary! - I’m going to assign Unit 4 to you in your vocabulary books. Please be aware that the new books I am giving you are different from the old books some of you have kept from last year. The words are the same; however, the format is different. The homework will be due on Tuesday, March 20th.

We will discuss CRIME and PUNISHMENT; then we will break into groups and dissect the novel (so to speak) up to Chapter 2 (depending on the translation you are reading, chapter 2 is around page 92). Analyzing last night’s homework, you may share what you have discovered in the reading for theme, motif and symbolism. Arrive at the three best examples of those categories and turn into me at the end of class.

For tonight’s reading, read chapter three, which ends around page 111. Again, as you read, write down things which you feel support or illuminate the theme, or is a motif or is used as symbolism. Bring them into tomorrow and discuss with class.

Thursday, March 15th:

I know this isn’t pleasant, but I will pass out your grammar book, WARRINER’S ENGLISH GRAMMAR and COMPOSITION, and assign “participial phrases”, page 68 - 69 to you. This will be due on Monday, March 19th.

We will go over last night’s reading (chapter 3) and then for tonight, read chapters 4 and 5. Don’t forget to write down themes, motifs, symbols and any other literary trope (figure of speech, etc) you find noteworthy.

Friday, March 16th:

I will assign poetry terms for you to work on. You and a partner will be given approximately three to five poetry terms to learn about, create a presentation and then teach the terms to the class. You will only be given about fifteen minutes MAX to work on this - we are running out of TIME! We will begin presenting next week. This will help you on your “Romantic Poetry” questions and tests, which were assigned over the break and no, I haven’t forgotten about and I hope you haven’t either.

Today we will go over last night’s reading (chapters 4 and 5) and for the week end, please read chapters 6 and 7 (up to Part lll).
