OCTOBER 15TH - OCTOBER 19TH
WEEKLY SCHEDULE
FOR
AP LITERATURE
MONDAY, OCTOBER 15TH:
Hi guys! I’m sorry but I’m not going to be with you again - more training! So today, I would like for you to either read ANTIGONE, if you haven’t read it or have forgotten what it is about, or begin working on your essay which will be due on Wednesday, October 17th, when I return.
The essay topic for OEDIPUS REX (which is due October 17th) is:
How well does Sophocles’ OEDIPUS REX conform to Aristotle’s POETICS?
It should be at least two pages long and include specific references to both Aristotle’s POETICS and Sophocles’ OEDIPUS REX.
Some handouts on the literary terms (CHIASMUS, CONCEIT and HAIKU) will be passed out today.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16TH:
Same as Monday.
I am going to assign another essay which will be due on Tuesday, October 23rd. The essay will involve an analysis of the development of a character which appears in two of the three plays of the OEDIPAL CYCLE. Choose one of the following characters:
Oedipus who appears in OEDIPUS REX and OEDIPUS at COLONUS
or:
Creon who appears in all three plays of the cycle
or
Antigone who appears in OEDIPUS at COLONUS and ANTIGONE.
Your assignment is to chart the change, the development of the character as s/he first appears in one of the plays and how the character changes (or does not change) during the course of the trilogy. How does the character change? What aspect of the character does not change? Does the character remain steadfast to an ideal or cause? Why or why not? Are there elements of the character’s personality that remain steadfast? What are they? Are these elements muted or do these elements still flare up when the character is provoked? Think of Oedipus and notice that even as an old man he still flies into rages against his sons. Has he changed significantly from the time he was a young man and flew into a rage against Teiresias?
Wednesday, October 17th:
I’m back.
Discussion of the OEDIPAL CYCLE.

The terms that will be on the test are as follows:
