Monday, December 10th:

Your Hamlet essay topics will be given to you today and will be due on the day of the final.

You should be finished with the reading of Act 3 of HAMLET. Your test will be due on Wednesday, December 12th. You should also be writing a reading log for Hamlet. This will help you understand the text.

Today I will pass out Barron’s SIDE BY SIDE. You are still expected to read the original text in your Folger’s edition, however.

We will begin discussing Act 3, particularly the famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy and the scene between Hamlet and Ophelia. After the discussion, we will watch Kenneth Branagh’s video.


Tuesday, December 11th:

Today we will go over Act 3, Scene 2 of Hamlet in which Hamlet plots with Horatio to spy on the king during the play, his instructions to the players, the play-within-the-play, and Hamlet’s argument with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. We will watch the video of Kenneth Branagh’s.

Wednesday, December 12th:

Your Act 3 test is due today.
We will discuss the famous Hamlet and Gertrude bedroom scene.
We will watch the video.
Your Act 4 test will be passed out to you today.
Please begin reading Act 4, Scenes 1, 2, and 3, if you haven’t already and please do your reading log.


Thursday, December 13th:

We will watch the video and then discuss Act 4, Scenes 1, 2, and 3 which are actually quite funny in a gruesome kind of way. For tonight continue reading Act 4, Scenes 4, 5, 6 and 7, and continue working on your reading log. These are very important scenes in which important decisions are made and the characters’ fates are played out.







Friday, December 14th:

Today there will be a discussion of Act 4, Scenes 4, 5, 6, and 7 in Hamlet. Your Act 4 test is due today. Your Act 5 test will be given to you today and will be due on Monday, December 17th. Please begin reading Act 5, if you haven't already and of course, do your reading log.

We will watch the video.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true?
