Monday, December 3rd:

Good morning, artists and scholars!

Vocabulary: Today you might want to bring your VOCABULARY WORKSHOP book; Unit 3 was assigned on Friday and will be due on Thursday. The warm-up exercise is to write five sentences with adjective clauses using five of your vocabulary words from Unit 3 (Level F or Level G).

Grammar: Pages 153-157, exercise 19,"active/passive voice", in your WARRINER’S (complete course) was assigned on Thursday (November 29th) and will be due on Tuesday, December 4th. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

We have read Act 2, Sc. 1 on Friday; today we will read Scene 2 - which is a long scene.

Remember, the Act 2 OPEN BOOK TEST will be due when we finish the act.

For tonight: read the next five pages starting from where we left off in our reading in class; please write down a brief summary of what you have read; unfamiliar words/phrases and their meanings, literary tropes and interesting things you might have noticed. Please do this for each night’s reading.


Tuesday, December 4th:

Shortened Day!

Your “Active/Passive” assignment from pages 153-157, exercise 19 from your WARRINER’S (complete course) is due today.

For your warm-up exercise: Write six sentences using your vocabulary words from Unit 3; write three sentences in active voice and then rewrite them in passive voice.

Read, analyze, discuss and act out Act 2, Scene 2.

Remember, the Act 2 OPEN BOOK TEST will be due when we finish the act.


Wednesday, December 5th:

Warm-up exercise: Using six of your vocabulary words from Unit 3, write two sentences with adverbial clauses, two sentences with adjective clauses, two sentences in active voice and then change to passive voice. In each sentence use a vocabulary word from Unit 3. In the two active voice sentences, you may use the same vocabulary words when you switch to passive voice.

Finish reading Act 2; your Act 2 OPEN BOOK TEST will be due when we finish the act.

Thursday, December 6th:

Your Vocabulary Unit 3 is due today.

Go over the open book test for Act 2 - I hope! Then begin reading Act 3. The Act Three OPEN BOOK TEST will be given to you today - if the copy room is up and running again.


Friday, December 7th:

Read, analyze, discuss and act out Act 3. The lovely Ms. Campbell will be here today to help us fill out our FAFSA's and Cal Grants.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true?
