Good evening everyone!

These are the assignments that are due and payable on the first day of school which is about two weeks away. They are:

Finish reading FRANKENSTEIN and CRIME and PUNISHMENT.

Finish the short forms for each novel.

Read the assignments in the ENGLAND in LITERATURE textbook and answer in complete sentences in clear, legible handwriting or on computer, on clean, crisp sheets of paper the following questions:

Please read Andrew Marvell's bio and his poem "To His Coy Mistress" (pages 288 - 290).
Please answer the questions on page 291 and answer question #1 under "Understanding; questions # 2 and #3 under "Analyzing" and question #4 under "Extending".

Please read John Donne"s bio on page 278 and read the following:
"Song", page 279
"The Bait", page 280
"A Valediction: Forbidden Mourning", pages 280-181
"Reader's Note", page 281
"Meditation 17", pages 283-284

Please answer questions on pages 284-285 on the above poems.

Please look on the blog for February 8th and read the bios/poems on the page numbers listed there and please answer the questions that I have created for those poems. The poets are Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh and Ben Jonson.

Christopher Marlowe's bio is on page 265; his poem is "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" and is on page 266.

Read Sir Walter Raleigh's bio; his poem is "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" and is on page 267.

These are the questions I want you to answer over the above two poems:

1. Which of the two poems would be classified as pastoral? Give specific reasons and evidence to support your position.

2. Compare the attitude expressed by Marlowe with that expressed by Raleigh in his. Which is the more realistic?

Please read Ben Jonson's bio and read his poems which are:"Song to Celia" and "On My First Son".

Please read "Ben Jonson's Vision of His Son" and "Carpe Diem".

Please go to the Friday, February 8th blog and read Ben Jonson's poem on the death of his infant daughter, "On My Daughter", and answer the three questions on the blog.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out?
