Monday, December 8th:
Warm-up: Using your vocabulary words from Unit 3, write two sentences with periodic sentence structure; two sentences with loose sentence structure and one with a balanced sentence structure. Briefly go over.
Finish discussing Act 1, Scene 3.
Your HAMLET Act 1 open book test is due today.
Begin reading Act 2.

Tuesday, December 9th:
Your Unit Three Vocabulary homework is due today.
HAMLET Act 2 open book test will be passed out. The test will be due when we finish Act 2.
Read and discuss Act Two of HAMLET.
Watch Act Two of Kenneth Branagh’s HAMLET.

Wednesday, December 10th:
Assign gerund phrases today, WARRINER’S ENGLISH GRAMMAR; pages 70 - 72; exercises 11 and 13. This will be due on Friday, December 12th.
Read and discuss Act Two of HAMLET.

Thursday, December 11th:
Warm-up: Using your vocabulary words from Unit Three, write two sentences with participial phrases, two with gerunds and one with balanced sentence structure.
Break into groups, work on Act 2; at the end of the period present a brief summary of the scene, and analysis of the characters, their relationships, themes and literary tropes.

Friday, December 12th:
Warm-up: Using your vocabulary words from Unit Three, write two sentences with participial phrases, two with gerunds and one with balanced sentence structure.
Break into groups to work on Act 2; at the end of the period present a brief summary of the scene, and analysis of the characters, their relationships, themes and literary tropes.
When we finish Act Two, the Act Two Open Book Test will be due. We will also break into groups, develop tableaux to present key events and characters from Act Two.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true?
