11/09/09 Weekly Agenda for AP English Literature

Monday, November 9th:
Clean-up day. Because it's been so crazy-busy for everyone, today will be a regrouping day.

The following assignments are overdue and need to be turned in as soon as possible!
Finish reading OEDIPUS AT COLONUS (Was suppose to be read by last week)
Write your OEDIPUS AT COLONUS essay:
On page 115, analyze Sophocles' use of literary terms exploring the nature of friendship. The OEDIPUS at COLONUS essay assignment was also due last week.

The following assignments are current:

Finish reading ANTIGONE (Must finish by Thursday, November 12th)

Write your essay on ANTIGONE: the essay prompt is exploring the arc of a character who is in two or more of the Oedipal plays and chart the development of the character. How does the character change? What prompts the character's change? How do the character's changes affect the play?
Work on Vocabulary Unit 3 which will be due on Tuesday, November 10th.

Tuesday, November 10th:
Your Unit 3 Vocabulary is due today.
Socratic Circle on OEDIPUS at Colonus

Wednesday, November 11th:
No school today!

Thursday, November 12th:
Socratic Circle on ANTIGONE
Break into groups and create a tableau for each play in the Oedipal
Trilogy.

Starting next week we will begin a review for the literary terms test.
We will also begin working on BEOWULF. We are way behind schedule.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true? How to Approach the A.P. prompt for MIDDLEMARCH How does Eliot portray characters? How does she portray complex relationship between husband and wife? Literary devices: Narrative perspective (Pov) and selection of detail. Middlemarch: underline novels!!!!! Rosamond’s personality: She was not given to weeping and disliked it.
