10/04/10 Weekly Agenda for AP English Literature

Monday, October 4th:
Discussion of CRIME and PUNISHMENT; chapters 6 and 7.
Please be sure to do your literary devices and vocabulary log for both chapters. You will be called upon to discuss the literary devices you have found in your readings. They will be due today in class.

Your essay on Raskolnikov’s nightmare is due today.

Read and discuss CRIME and PUNISHMENT; Part 2; Chapter 1
Finish reading the chapter at home tonight and answer the questions over Part 2, Chapter 1. Be prepared to discuss the questions in class on Wednesday.

Wednesday, October 6th:
Discussion of the questions on CRIME and PUNISHMENT; Part 2, Chapter 1. Turn the questions in at end of class.
Begin reading Part 2, Chapter 2; finish reading for homework tonight and answer the questions. Be prepared to discuss the questions in class on Thursday.

Thursday, October 7th:
Discussion of last night’s reading of Part 2, Chapter 2; go over the questions on Part 2, Chapter 2. Turn your questions in at end of class.
Begin reading Part 2, Chapter 3. Finish at home and do the literary devices and vocabulary for Chapter 3. You will be called on tomorrow in class to share the literary devices you found in Chapter 3. These will be turned in at the end of class.

Friday, October 8th:
Go over last night’s reading of Chapter 3 and share the literary devices you found. At the end of class turn in the literary devices. Begin reading Chapter 4. For the weekend, read Chapter 4 and 5 and do the literary devices and vocabulary for each.

Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 1

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true?
