Weekly Agenda for A.P. English Literature
Please note that all work for this grading period is due no later than Tuesday, April 12th. Any work turned in after Tuesday will count for the next grading period, not the midterm.
Monday, April 11th:
Go over the answers to the multiple choice questions on John Keats’ poem, “On the Sonnet”.
Read and discuss William Blake’s biography and his two poems, “The Lamb” and “The Tyger”. View his amazing art work.
Go over the compare and contrast essay for William Blake's two poems, "The Chimney Sweep".
For homework: finish reading FRANKENSTEIN and the journal entries for the novel.
Tuesday, April 12th:
Shortened day:
Discuss FRANKENSTEIN
Your journals are due today.
Remember: All work must be turned in today to be counted for the midterm grade.
For homework: Choose one of the essay topics on FRANKENSTEIN and write a minimum of a three page, typed (12 font) essay. The essay topics are to be found on the blog under FRANKENSTEIN, “Topics to Be Aware of While Reading FRANKENSTEIN. You must cite specific examples (at least two must be quotations) from the book to support your thesis. This will be due on Friday, April 15th.
Wednesday, April 13th:
In class writing assignment: Compare and contrast essay on two poems, "When I Have Fears" by John Keats, and "Mezzo Cammin" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This will be due at the end of the period.
Thursday, April 14th:
Read and discuss Jean-Paul Sartre’s essay, “Existentialism”, W.T. Stace’s essay, “Man Against the Darkness”, and Reinhold Niebuhr’s essay, “The Christian Commitment”.
Friday, April 15th:
Begin reading WAITING FOR GODOT.
Over the spring break: read and outline Aristotle’s THE POETICS, read THE OEDIPAL CYCLE (OEDIPUS REX, OEDIPUS at COLONUS, and ANTIGONE). Write a minimum three page, typed (12 font) essay which will be due on Monday, April 25th. The essay topic is: Analyze OEDIPUS REX in terms of THE POETICS. Does the play conform to Aristotle’s ideals of unity of time and place? Is the protagonist of sufficient magnitude? Is the plot simple or complex? Does the play have reversal and/or recognition? Give evidence from the play to support your thesis.
This will be due on April 25th.
