Monday, February 25th:
Read CRIME and PUNISHMENT
On page ten in CRIME and Punishment, the motif of hopelessness, of “no place to turn”  is introduced.  The motif of utter spiritual loneliness tolls throughout the passage as Raskolnikov, this strange isolated youth sits in a tavern with a pathetic, broken down old drunk. 
Please write a minimum one-page analysis of how the story of Marmeladov and his daughter is an example – and the down fall – of the Utilitarian Theory.  This will be due at the end of class.
Vocabulary Workshop: Level G; Unit 4 will be assigned and will be due on Friday, March 1st.

Tuesday, February 26th:
Read CRIME and PUNISHMENT
Please write a minimum one-page analysis of the color yellow and how it is used in CRIME and PUNISHMENT. Reference when it is used to describe a person, a place or an object and the symbolic, metaphoric meaning of its use.  This will be due at the end of class.
Please read up to page 53; Part 1; Chapter 6 by Wednesday

Wednesday, February 27th:
Multiple Choice Questions on "Patty's Drive-in"
Collect and go over tomorrow!

Homework: Read up to page 74 in CRIME and PUNISHMENT
For tonight: Write a one page minimum analysis of page 53 – 57, the scene in the tavern of a conversation between a student and a soldier about the wretched old pawn broker, which Raskolnikov overhears. Analyze how this relates to the Utilitarian Theory. 

Thursday, February 28th:
Preparations for a time essay from George Eliot’s MIDDLEMARCH

Friday, March 1st:
Timed essay on MIDDLEMARCH.
Read up to 75, Part 2, Chapter 1
For homework, prepare three questions regarding the characters, the themes, metaphors, symbols, and motifs you have encountered in your wanderings with Raskolnikov.  This will be due on Monday in preparation for a Socratic Circle.
