Monday, March 4th:
A brief primer on Nietzsche: pass out Nietzsche packet; break into groups and read the highlighted areas.
Question for Tonight:
In your days spent in the company of Raskolnikov, do you think he is acting upon or working his way through Nietzsche’s concept of the “Ubermensche”? Give evidence to support or disprove the questions.  Write a minimum of two pages explaining why you agree or disagree with the statement, providing examples from the book to support your position.  This will be due Wednesday, March 6th. 

Tuesday, March 5th:
Discussion of last night’s assignment.
Read through and act out pages 67 - 74 in CRIME and PUNISHMENT
A.P. Test Preparation:
Multiple choice questions on Oscar Wilde’s THE PORTRAIT of DORIAN GRAY
For homework: read Part 2, Chapter 1 in CRIME and PUNISHMENT
Analyze the chapter for the motif of delirium, and the other effects his recent activity has had on him. Referring to his theories about why criminals get  caught, does he fall into the same trap as other criminals? Due on Wednesday, March 6th.

Wednesday, March 6th:
Go over the answers for THE PORTRAIT of DORIAN GRAY
A.P. Test Preparation:
Preparations for THE PUPIL, the next in class essay
Your two page essay on Raskolnikov fulfilling Nietzsche's ideas about the Ubermenche is due. 

Thursday, March 7th:
In class essay, THE PUPIL by Henry James
For homework tonight:
Prepare three questions regarding characters, theme, metaphors, symbols, and motifs you have found in your wanderings with Raskolnikov.  You will be put in groups of four and will participate in a Socratic circle.

Friday, March 8th:
Break into groups to do the Socratic Circle on CRIME and PUNISHMENT.
Read Part 2, Chapter 2 in CRIME and PUNISHMENT
Analyze Chapter 2 for examples of irony, religious symbolism and the motif of delirium. This will be due on Monday, March 11th.

Hamlet Act 2, Scene 1: In this scene Polonius is giving instructions to his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes, his son, in Paris. (Again, note the theme of spying) Polonius is giving Reynaldo money to give to his son, but tells him to “to make inquire of his behavior”. “Inquire me first what Danskers are in town….” This is an example of elision or omission of words (words are intentionally left out to insure the lines scan in iambic pentameter.) What word or words are left out? Dansker: Danes Polonius tells Reynaldo to inquire about Laertes’ behavior in a roundabout general way: “encompassment and drift of question” and by this way will arrive at the truth faster and more completely than by asking directly (“…come you more nearer / Than your particular demands will touch it.”) Do you think that’s true? Oedipus Notes Act 1 There is a pestilence which has descended upon Thebes.  The people of Thebes have assembled at the front steps of Oedipus’ palace to plead with him to save them as he once did with the Sphinx. Oedipus says that he has sent Creon to ask Teiresias to come and tell them what he knows, but Creon has been gone for some time now and all anxiously wait for his return. Creon at last arrives and says he has spoken with Teiresias but first asks Oedipus if he would like to hear the news in private or in front of the people. By his comment, “I am prepared to speak, but should we not go in?” suggests that he would like to be more cautious and circumspect. Oedipus’ response is “Let them all hear it.
