Essay #12: Svidrigailov's Analysis
Write a minimum of three pages on Svidrigailov (pages 237 - 248). Note that Svidrigailov's entrance is presaged by Raskolnilov's nightmare of trying to kill the old pawnbroker who only laughs at him. In the three page essay, analyze Svidrigailov's enigmatic personality, his strange obsessions, the recurring motif of delirium and delusions,  his views of what perhaps the "afterlife" might be like (..."one little room, something like a bath-house in the country....black with soot, with spiders in every corner, and that is the whole of eternity...." Consider that Svidrigailov might be the spiritual twin of Raskolnikov. Do you think that they are on the same path, that both have no place to turn?
