Find the lines that reveal his attitude towards his mother.
Find Hamlet's puns in this scene. What do his puns reveal about his state of mind?
What advice does Claudius give Hamlet regarding his father's death?

Scene 3:
Pages 43 - 44; lines 60 - 87
Paraphrase Polonious' words of advice to his son, Laertes.
Which words of advice were helpful and actually wise?

Scene 5:
Pages 57 - 61
According to the ghost, how did he die?
What does the ghost say regarding Hamlet's mother?
Identify and analyze the imagery and other figurative devices used

What does “green girl” mean?
It means inexperienced, unripe, not ready for marriage, not ready for work.
Libertine: someone free from the constraints of society’s rules in terms of personal morality. Someone who is promiscuous, who over imbibes in drink or drugs, heedless of the consequences.

Line 65: Polonius is telling Laertes not to say everything he thinks. “To keep his own counsel”.

Line 67: Polonus is saying be friendly but don’t be too familiar to the point of being vulgar or rude.
Andres:
Line 75: Polonius is saying you may not like someone’s ideas but don’t judge him.
Elgin:
Line  84 – 86: Be true to yourself
Lela:
Lines 81 – 84: Polonius says to not loan money nor borrow money for loaning money will lose you both your money and your friendship, and borrowing money will not teach you how to manage and budget (husband) your money.

Went over Polonius’ speech to Ophelia:
Identify the money references, metaphors, and puns:
Tender: legal tender, which means it can be used for commerce.
Tender: also means to handle with great care, gentleness, and love.
Polonius: “Do you believe his “tenders” as you call them?
Think yourself a baby
That you have ta’en these tenders for true pay,
Which are not sterling (silver or not legal tender) Tender yourself more dearly,
Or….you’ll tender me a fool. (Have a baby without being married)

What does this reveal about the difference between Polonius’ attitude and treatment of his son and daughter?

Had everyone get in groups of three, take roles and read and act out the above scene.

Read
Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 5; lines 14 – 119; pages 57 – 63
Analyze this for meaning and look for figurative language

1.     Where does the ghost spend his days?

2.     Describe where the ghost spends his day?

3.     Can the ghost tell a mortal or describe to the mortal where he is?
4.     And if he did, what effect would it have on the mortal?
5.     What is leprous distilment – line 71?
6.     How did the King die?
7.     Describe the body of the king as he was dying.
8.     Find the allusion on page 59. What is it referencing? What is the ghost  saying to his son by using this allusion?
An allusion is a reference in a piece of literature that refers to another piece of literature, the bible, mythology, art, or history or historical event. 

For tonight, please read Act 2, Scene 1
Please identify the figurative language, and what is revealed by the figurative language. If it is metaphor, simile or personification, identify what is being compared to what, and what this comparison reveals about the person, etc. being compared. 

Thursday, October 27th: 
Act out Act 2, Scene 1: Polonius and Ophelia
Contrast the character of Polonius in this scene, Act  2, Scene 1, with the character  he shows in Act 1, Scene 3. What is revealed about Polonius in these two contrasting scenes? 
Watch Act 2 of Hamlet in Kenneth Branagh's film. 

For homework tonight: please read Act 2, Scene 2 
The Sonnet packet will be given today;  this will be due on Tuesday, November 1st.
