Wrong: Raskolnikov met Marmeladov at the tavern he was a drunk.
Raskolnikov met a drunk by the name of Marmeladov at the
tavern.
At the tavern Raskolnikov met Mermeladov, who was a
drunk.
Relative nouns: who, which, that, whom, whomever, where
Wrong: “Crime and Punishment” by Dostoevsky he used the color
yellow to show corruption.
Never write Dostoevsky followed by “he”
Raskolnikov he = NEVER
“Who” is used when writing about people
“That” is used when you are writing about animals or
concepts or things.
“The old lady lived in an apartment where everything had a
yellowish gleam. Her neck was yellowish and the furniture had been polished so
that it shone with a yellowish light.” Wrong! There is no introduction! Don’t list! You need to introduce the quotation: who is the
old lady? Alyona Ivanovna. What does she do? She cheats the poor out of their money. Describe her: Alyona is
greedy – avaricious – dishonest, stubborn, stingy, wicked. How does Dostoevsky
show this through the color yellow?
Marmeladov’s face
Who is he? Why is his face yellow? What is the significance
of his yellow face?
How does this connect with his daughter’s yellow ticket?
Who is she, the possessor of this yellow ticket?
Run-on and Misplaced Modifier:
Raskolnikov meets a guy who has a daughter she is a prostitute in the tavern he starts telling his life story and how he drinks too much and his daughter has to carry around a ticket.
Raskolnikov meets Marmeladov at a tavern, where he starts
telling the young man about his life.
Marmeladov is an alcoholic whose drinking has impoverished his family. His wife has bullied his daughter into becoming a prostitute to earn money so that the family can eat. Sonia now must carry a yellow card which identifies her as a prostitute.
Sentence Fragment:
Raskolnikov is so exhausted mentally and physically.

Discuss the significance of that dream as it pertains to the theme of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. Discuss also the symbolism used by Dostoevsky in the Epilogue to reveal Raskolnikov’s transformation; for example, the time of year this dream occurs, Lent and Easter, Sonia’s illness and subsequent reappearance.
