Go over some basics in submitting your work:

In the upper right hand corner of your paper
Please do the following:

Tonight you may turn in your Perrine’s to schoology without penalty.
Unit 2, #1 – 10 today; due date will be Tuesday, September 12th.
Bring your Vocabulary Workshop tomorrow.

“The Dead” in-class Analysis

Passage of time  is a motif in “The Dead”

There is a comparison or juxtaposition of opposing characteristics:
Gabriel: weak, cowardly, lame, strange, useless,
Michael Fury: honorable, brave,
Sydney: Gabriel is at peace right now; he is over his resentful.
Brandy: Gabriel is a pessimist
Creepy = unsettling 

Go over the annotation of the excerpt:
Always look for pairs of opposite, or contrasts, or juxtaposition of contrasting polar opposites.
Discussion

Brief discussion of the opening paragraph
Read and discuss opening paragraphs A, B, C, and D

Read and discussed what should be included in the body of the prose passage essay:
Don’t always paraphrase but refer directly to text
Place quotation marks around those words or phrases you wish to extract from the text.
Use connective tissue in your essay to establish adherence to the question.
Use repetition of key ideas from your opening paragraph
Use echo words – death/loss/parting/passing  or sleep/death
Create transitions from one paragraph to the next.

In class writing assignment:
In the excerpt from the short story "The Dead", James Joyce presents an insight into the character of Gabriel. Write a well-organized essay in which you discuss how Joyce reveals aspects of Gabriel's character to the reader and to Gabriel himself. Refer to such techniques and devices as imagery, point of view, motif, diction, and syntax. 

Friday, September 8th: 
Break into pairs, write a short scene using two of the vocabulary words #1 - 10 from Unit 2. The scene should have a plot, an arc, character relationship, and a situation or conflict. The vocabulary words should be used correctly and within the context of the scene.
