Thursday, March 22nd: 
 Read the two poems by William Blake - The Chimney Sweeper (1789) and The Chimney Sweeper (1794).

Analyze the two poems and annotate them. Discussion.


Read two poems by William Blake
What did you notice in the poem?
Snow and woe
Snow and woe
His father sold him when he was too young to say “sweep”
Irony  - weep and sweep
White is the color of purity – Tom’s white hair
Coffins in black is symbolic of chimneys
An angel with a key set them free
They went to heaven – clean and green and a river and it shines in the sun

Now analyze and contrast the second poem written in 1794 with the first poem written in 1879. Is there a difference in tone between the two poems? What contributes to the difference in tone of the two poems.
